R’ Chanan (Antony) Gordon Short Bio

AntonyGordonbioAntony Gordon is one of a select group of Orthodox Jews who have attained the highest level of respect, admiration and achievement in two “worlds” that traditionally represent antithetical cultures and lifestyles – i.e. – the so-called Secular World on the one hand; and the so-called Torah World on the other hand. Rabbi Gordon’s effervescent personality, brilliant humor and sincere unjudgmental concern for all Jews have enabled him to move seamlessly between these two “worlds.” Accordingly, Rabbi Gordon and/Antony are referred to interchangeably in the brief bio below depending on the specific context:

Antony was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa where he attended the University of the Witwatersrand (“Wits”). After graduating with a B.A. (Cum Laude) and LL.B (Cum Laude), Antony was awarded the Sir Abe Bailey Fellowship (part of the Rhodes Trust), to the United Kingdom. On his return to South Africa, he became one of the youngest Advocates to be admitted before the Supreme Court. Soon thereafter he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship for outstanding academic excellence and all-round ability to the Harvard Law School.

While completing his Masters in Law (LL.M) at Harvard, Antony also audited classes at the Harvard Business School as well as chaired the Harvard International Rock for Education (H.I.R.E) Committee. Rabbi Gordon’s reputation as an indefatigable and committed leader in the Los Angeles Jewish community was elevated to a national level in 1986 when the now renowned research article that Antony co-authored with Richard Horowitz (President of Aish Hatorah International) entitled Will Your Grandchild Be Jewish?” accompanied by a graphic inter- denominational chart illustrating the conclusions extrapolated from the raw data of the NJPS 1990 was translated into 10 languages and appeared in numerous publications including the likes of The Vanishing American Jew by Professor Alan Dershowitz, Moment magazine and The New York Times and was presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during Rabbi Moshe Sherer’s last Am Echad Mission to Israel.

Rabbi Gordon has assumed a position of leadership in the Orthodox community in America, including having been the Co-Chairman of the Agudath Israel Convention (2007) as well as the Chairman of the AJOP Convention (2007).
